What You Can Do for Haiti

DONATIONS FOR HAITI

Paducah, Kentucky – January 27, 2010: Our hearts and prayers go out to those who are suffering in the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. All of us want to do anything and everything we can to help. Since we are quiltmakers, our first inclination is to gather our fabric and thread and make a quilt. Though beautiful and comforting, a quilt may not be a practical donation for this tropical country at this time.

In all the reports we are hearing from Haiti, the most immediate requests are for water, food, and medical supplies. Organizations presently in Haiti are in a position to assess the most critical needs and they suggest that monetary donations are the best alternative so they can more easily fill these needs.

We would like to encourage you to make a monetary donation to a reputable organization of your own choosing so the people of Haiti can receive the assistance they desperately need. Be sure to choose an organization that has an excellent reputation for providing assistance during natural disasters. This will ensure your donation will go where it is needed and not be misdirected. Thank you, quilters, for your generosity.

Here is the latest news on the 2010 AQS Quilt Shows...

AQS Quilt Show - Lancaster, PA, March 24 - 27, 2010:
It is now just 59 days until the AQS Quilt Show opens at the Lancaster County Convention Center and Liberty Place Conference Center in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. There will be quilts and vendors at both of these locations.

Lancaster Quilt Show Registration: Advance registration is recommended. Here is the direct link to the online registration, or you can call the AQS office at 270-898-7903 and ask for Quilt Show Registration. If you register by February 10, your name badge will be mailed to you. Don't forget to order admission too - all confirmed items you have ordered will be on your name badge and it will admit you to those events. The last day for advance registration is March 3 at 3 p.m. Those registrations received between February 11 and March 3 will be held for pickup at the AQS Workshop Desk in the hallway outside Freedom Hall in the convention center. All international registrations are held for pickup at the show too.

Attention Charter Tour Groups: Have you purchased admission for your Charter group? Avoid standing in a long line at the show waiting to purchase admission tickets for your group - call Laura Davis (270-898-7903, ext. 132) by March 3 to order your tickets and they will be shipped to you.

Lancaster Lodging: Book your hotel room through the Passkey system online by clicking here, or by calling 800-PA-DUTCH,  Monday through Friday, 8:30 – 5:00 eastern time. Those who book their rooms through Passkey will receive a free shuttle pass when you check in to your hotel. If you have booked your room through another source or the hotel directly, you can purchase a shuttle pass online through the PA Dutch Country visitors bureau by clicking here; you will also be able to purchase the shuttle passes at the PA Dutch Country booths at the Lancaster County Convention Center and at the Liberty Place Conference Center. The hotel shuttle buses are only free to those who have booked their rooms through the Passkey system.

Lancaster Parking: To streamline parking and moving quilters to the convention center, two parking lots have been reserved, with free Express Parking Shuttle service to the Lancaster County Convention Center:

Parking Lot at Liberty Place Conference Center is located at 313 West Liberty Street, Lancaster, PA, 17603: the lots are across the street from the building - look for the AQS Quilt Show Parking signs. When you park at Liberty Place, don't miss seeing the quilt exhibits and vendors inside the Liberty Place Conference Center. Then you can hop on the Express Parking Shuttle Bus to the convention center.

The Burle Parking Lot is located at 1000 New Holland Avenue, Lancaster, PA, 17601. There is a stoplight at the entrance to this parking area, and it is just a short distance from Highway 30 if you are traveling from the direction of Philadelphia. When you see T and V on the light poles, you are in the right parking lot for AQS attendees - watch for the AQS Quilt Show Parking signs. (There is a separate lot at this location for AQS vendors who are in the convention center, and for charter buses attending the show - these signs will say AQS Vendors & Charter Bus Parking).

Parking in the Liberty Place and Burle lots is $5 per vehicle, to be paid as you enter the lot. Free Express Parking Shuttle service will run continuously between these two AQS Quilt Show parking lots and the convention center. The Express Parking Shuttle Bus Stop will be located in front of the Marriott Penn Square Grill on King Street... that's just outside the doors of the Marriott at Penn Square Hotel (attached to the Lancaster County Convention Center).

There are a number of pay-to-park parking garages in downtown Lancaster: Duke Street, Prince Street, Penn Square, Water Street, and E. King Street. Daily Rates: $2.00 for the first hour; $1.00 per hour (or any fraction thereof) for each additional hour up to a maximum of $14.00 per day.

AQS Quilt Show - Paducah, April 21 - 24, 2010:

Paducah Quilt Show Registration: Online registration is open for the Paducah Show. Here is the link to take you directly to online registration. Telephone registration for Paducah will open on January 27; then you can call 270-898-7903 and ask for Quilt Show Registration.

Also, the AQS Home Bed and Breakfast program, with lodging in private homes, is coordinated by the Paducah Convention and Visitors Bureau. Beginning February 1, you can call 1-800-PADUCAH to request an application for the home bed and breakfast. Hundreds of quilters and vendors stay in private homes every year through this program.

Special Evening Events: One of the changes we have made in the Paducah show this year is to have all reserved seating for the evening events (Kaffe Fassett on Wednesday, 7 - 9 p.m.; Eleanor Burns on Thursday, 8 - 9:30 p.m.; and Ricky Tims on Friday, 7 - 9 p.m.) at the Carson Four Rivers Center. This will eliminate having to stand in line for hours in the rain or heat. For tickets, call 270-450-4444, Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or stop at the Box Office at the Carson Four Rivers Center, 100 Kentucky Avenue, in downtown Paducah, Kentucky. Paducah Update...

Here is an update on the convention facilities for the Paducah Quilt Show:
In December, the city of Paducah purchased the Executive Inn from the mortgage holder, Logan Asset Backed Fund, for $1.8 million. The city estimates it will spend another $1.8 for demolition, liens, and other expenses. The city will be seeking developers to build a new hotel in downtown Paducah.

The Quilt Show will use the Paducah Expo Center (quilts and vendors), the Julian Carroll Convention Center (quilts and vendors), and a NEW 40,000 square foot air dome Pavilion (quilts and vendors); plus the AQS Vendors on Kentucky will be located in the Finkel Building (vendors and the AQS "Hurt" book sale).

The NEW Pavilion is being constructed now, but the manufacturer provided us with some photos of another installation. The Pavilion will be 140 feet wide x 270 feet long x 43 feet high (that's four stories). This huge new facility will house the vendors who were located in the Galleria (in the Executive Inn) last year, plus a special exhibit by Kaffe Fassett, and the 2009 winners of the AQS/Hobbs Bonded Fibers Fashion Show. Your show admission gives you access to the Pavilion, as well as the Expo Center and Convention Center areas.

This is a sample of the type of Pavilion we will have to house vendors and some special quilt exhibits.

The interior of a Pavilion is set with vendor booths. Aisles will be carpeted and it will have air conditioning/heat as needed.
.
Purchase your show admission in advance:
You can save time and money by ordering your show admission in advance.

Advanced Admission is: $8 daily or $15 multi-day for AQS Members; $10 daily or $30 multi-day for Non-members.

At the Door Admission is: $9 daily or $17 multi-day for AQS Members; $11 daily or $30 multi-day for Non-members.
.
Sometimes the lines are long waiting to pay admission; register for the show (including your show admission) by March 10 and you'll receive a name badge with your admission on it via mail - no waiting in lines at all. Note: All international registrations are held for pickup at the show. Click here to go directly to registration for the quilt show.
.
We are excited to have the NEW Pavilion available for this year's quilt show. There will be plenty of quilts to see and vendors to visit for shopping.
